Able Ships Ltd – Complete Technical Service

The Marine Surveyors, Naval Architects and Specialist Surveyors from Able Ships Ltd are all recognized by Maritime New Zealand. They are available to carry out a wide range of approval work, for all vessels that operate within the New Zealand Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS). They also provide high level technical support for many vessels that operate outside the MOSS system. Here are some examples of the services available:

Survey

Our surveyors carry out a wide range of different surveys. In addition to the standard periodic surveys, there are load line surveys, lifting equipment inspections, barge safety surveys, IOPP surveys, and special surveys after repairs and modifications. For new vessels, there are new construction surveys and initial surveys when entering service. Surveyors prepared reports of their work, and where required Certificates of Survey are issued by the Able Ships office.

Stability

Our naval architects carry out inclining experiments, and prepare and issue new stability books. We also assess existing stability books, measure hull lines, and carry swamp test calculations and heeling tests. For some vessels we assess safe stability while using lifting equipment, and provide stability information for the loading of barges.

Load Line

We assess vessels for the load line requirements in accordance with Maritime Rule 47, and the International Load Line Regulations, and determine the exact load line locations. The surveyors carry out conditions of assignment surveys, for items such as ventilators and hatches.

Tonnage

For ships that requiring Tonnage Certificates, our naval architects carry out measurement and calculation in accordance with Maritime Rule 48, and the International Tonnage Convention. We submit to the documents to MNZ who issue the certificates

Design Approval

We review and approve designs and plans for new construction, modifications and repairs, and approvals of existing vessels. This can include lifting equipment and electrical systems.

Maritime Transport Operators Plan

Able Ships provides a service to assist vessel operators to produce their MTOP (Maritime Transport Operators Plan), this can be from as little as a review of your own MTOP before submitting, or gathering information and providing the complete manuals and other documents. Able Ships can also provide ongoing support service, including auditing vessel operators to ensure ongoing compliance.

National Inspection Agency for Lifting Appliances

Able Ships is also an approved National Inspection Agency, and can carry out approval, inspection and testing of all ships’ lifting appliances and loose cargo gear, as required by Rule 49 and other standards.

Consultancy Service

We also offer a complete consultancy service. This includes new vessel design, alterations to existing vessels, propulsion analysis, accident investigation and much more. On some projects we work closely with Class Societies, insurers, and maritime law experts.
